Experience ARA 2019

Ara offers and extensive amount of Taster day courses , information evenings and holiday programs. Most of these are only available to year 12 or 13 students. Taster courses are a fantastic opportunity to go and get a  feel for study at Ara, try something hands on and experience the learning and facilities on offer.

When registering students and parents need to be aware that:

  1.  parental permission must be obtained and indicated on their application.
  2.  these are not school trips and students will require their own transport
  3.  it is the students responsibility to talk to teachers, catch up work and check they will not miss key assessments
  4.  parents should call the office, or give a note, explaining the absence, when a student receives an email confirming their place on the course.
  5.  if a students accepts a place and does not attend ,without 48 hours notice to ARA or a medical certificate , a $50 Ara cancellation fee will be charged to their  school account

NOTE: If student wishes to investigate STAR (paying) courses they must see the Careers team before looking at any registration process.

Our careers team has a timetable of all events and are happy to show students how to use the link and register at home with parental permission. Taster courses are free and students can register their interest here.

interested in becoming a barber? try a free taster day

ARA’s new Level 3 Barbering programme is starting next year! Coming up next month there is a new senior taster for students to experience what it would be like to study this programme. The taster will give students the opportunity to have a go at a number of barbering techniques and activities and meet some of our current hairdressing students.

Free Experience ARA tasters

The following tasters are coming up very soon. Interested student can sign up by talking to the careers department and then using the links below. You will need permission from your parents and the school will get an email to confirm you are allowed to attend. These should not be organised if you have an NCEA assessment on that day.

Senior Tasters

  • Car Club – Thursdays from 26 July to 16 August (4 x 2 hours) – Woolston Campus
    Come explore your passion for cars and have some hands on automotive experiences!
  • Sparky for a Day –  3 August, Woolston Campus
    Try out a range of hands-on electrical experiences and find out more about being an Electrician
  • Business in a Box – 1 August, Timaru Campus
    Create a business plan based on the idea and resources in your ‘business box’
Junior Tasters
  • Trades Taster (year 10 only) – Get a hands-on experience in engineering and construction as you work in teams to construct a medieval ‘trebuchet’ catapult!
    • 14 August, Woolston Campus
    • 23 August – Timaru Campus

Free Experience ARA taster days

Are you looking for a day to try out a possible course or career direction? ARA runs free taster courses for senior students. Students should browse possible courses using the link below, discuss with parents and the careers department before registering themselves. You should not register when you have an assessment at school. The registration process requires both school and parental permission.

Courses this term include:

Music and Arts, NASDA for a day, Broadcasting, Electrical Trades, Plumbing, Sustainability and Outdoors, Cookery, Hospitality-Front of House, ICT-Coding, Business in a Box, Nursing, Automotive, Ace of Trades

Girls in High Vis

Fulton Hogan Canterbury is hosting a “Girls with Hi Vis” event, on the 19th June 2018. At this event, you will be able to experience first-hand what a career at Fulton Hogan can offer, (including Cadetship opportunities). You will be able to get up close and personal with the big machinery in addition to receiving a tour of our Laboratory and purpose built Training Ground as well as listening to inspirational stories from successful women from all areas of our diverse business.  We aim to give you an insight into what it is like to have a career in the Civil Construction Industry!

 This offering is for year 12 and 13 students.
Students passionate about singing, dancing & acting?
You can attend the National Academy of Singing and Dancing art and get  a feel for what it would be like to be a Bachelor of Performing Arts student at NASDA for a day!
